Violence in the home can affect people of all classes and races and violence can happen at any stage of the relationship or marriage. In the majority of cases of violence during marriage, it is the women that is the victim and the man that is the abuser. In very rare instances is it the other way around, however there have been cases where the man has been on the receiving end of domestic violence. However, in all cases of domestic violence it is essential to remember that is not acceptable. Violence in the home is a common reason for divorce and there are different types of domestic violence. Any of the types below are acceptable reasons for divorce.


Types of domestic violence that leads to divorce

These are the most common types of domestic violence

  • Physical which includes hitting, slapping, punching, hair pulling or pinching

  • Sexual violence which may include assault or actually rape

  • Physiological which may include any type of verbal threat, phone calls, intimidation or bullying

  • Financial controlling behaviour which may include limiting the finances of another

  • Controlling behaviour overall which may include keeping one captive in the home with threats


Domestic violence in a marriage with children

If there are children in a marriage and there is domestic violence in the home towards one parent, this can lead to the child/children suffering from physical abuse. In this case, you may want to consider separation and divorce as soon as possible for the sake of children.

  • Children may intervene during an episode of domestic violence which may result in them becoming accidentally hurt

  • They may copy the violent behaviour that is seen by the parent

  • Illnesses related to stress can occur

  • Confidence may be lost and children may blame themselves for what is happening
