It's not the easiest thing to plunge back in to the dating scene after you get a divorce. When you got married, you probably thought you'd be done with dating and maybe for several years, you were. It's understandable that while dating was once pretty exciting for you, it may now be a little scary to go out and give other people a chance to get to know you.
As you go out to date people after the divorce, consider a few things first:
1. Improve your relationship with yourself first before potentially starting a relationship with another person. - It's never going to feel quite right to jump into dating without first making sure that you've faced up to the things you need to do for yourself after the divorce. After you split with your ex spouse, spend some time by yourself and treat yourself right, especially if you came from a difficult or abusive relationship.
2. When you met other people, make sure they have good self esteem. - At this point in your life, you don't need somebody who will be overly dependent and emotionally needy. One sign that you're not ready to date yet is if you feel that you can just put up with another person's low self esteem, probably so you can feel like you're needed by somebody. However, this kind of thing is not something healthy you should sustain in your future relationship.
3. If you're not ready, don't push yourself to date. - There's no formula or specific number of days to follow. Nobody else can tell you if you're ready to date except you. Some people swear by the three-month rule, some people say it's longer. Even if you got out from a bad marriage, if you need to take a year for yourself, just do it. Don't talk yourself into getting into another relationship for all the wrong reasons.
4. Learn to recognize when you need to stop. - It's normal to have false starts. If you feel like you rushed into dating too soon, don't be afraid to admit this to yourself and just stop for a while. Sometimes this is the best thing to do. Divorce proceedings can take a lot out of a person, and sometimes it's only reasonable to test the waters a bit to find out when you're ready to date again.
5. Find somebody you really have something in common with - Infatuation doesn't last. Try to find somebody you can really share a satisfying companionship with. After getting divorced, some stability in a relationship could help you out and being with somebody who can only fascinate you for a short period of time isn't the best way to go.
