What if my spouse has not paid alimony? E-mail

Failure to pay spousal support or alimony is a crime and is subject to punishment by law. However, each state has different spousal support rules so it is difficult to say what must happen if the alimony remains unpaid. In this case, you must consult your family law attorney and see what needs to be done in your respective states.

Also, do not let unpaid alimony past you by without doing anything. Some states do not allow recipients of alimony to be collected if it has remained unpaid for more than five years unless the recipient spouse was able to set a new extended deadline, which can be done by filing the necessary paperwork within 90 days before the original deadline.
