How long does spousal support or alimony last? E-mail

It depends on how long the marriage has lasted and the employment status of the spouse being supported. Normally, spousal support only lasts until half of the time their marriage has lasted. For instance, a marriage of 8 years will only have 4 years of spousal support.

However, the court reserves the right to review the terms of the alimony even after the allotted time for the spousal support has elapsed. The purpose of this is to determine if there is still a need to institute the alimony for a longer period of time or indefinitely.

For spouses who are of age and having difficult securing employment despite their efforts, it is possible that the court would impose alimony as long as their supporting spouses are able to provide the support or if the spouse does not terminate the agreement by operation of law.

If the supporting spouse feels that the spouse being supported has overextended the alimony, he may file a motion to the court and modify the spousal support.
