Many people who are facing the prospect of divorce proceedings want to turn to marriage counseling to see if their marriage can still be saved. Marriage counseling can be very helpful in a marriage because it helps you and your spouse bring issues to the fore and truly communicate with each other.
However, marriage counseling is no magic pill. It's not a clear-cut formula or a panacea that will "cure" your marriage of its ills. Marriage counseling is typically effective under these circumstances:
1. Couples sincerely want to work things out - Some people go to counseling just so that they can say they went. They go through the motions without really putting any effort in it. This is probably because they waited too long before they sought counseling and in their hearts they've probably already given up on the marriage. Couples who seek counseling because they sincerely want the marriage to work have a better chance of getting something out of marriage counseling.
2. When both couples are willing to work things out - It's very hard to make marriage counseling work if one of the couples has already decided that he/she is going through with the divorce. At that point, marriage counseling may be a bit too late to prevent divorce from happening.
3. Couples are open to the idea of marriage counseling - The idea of involving another person in one's private affair is not something everybody can really accept. Some people have already closed their minds to the possibility that a third party can help repair their marriage when they think they've already done everything that could be done to save the marriage.
Depending on your attitude towards counseling and, more importantly, your marriage, counseling can be a good idea or a lost cause.
