The divorce rate of US female soldiers has swelled this year. With more than 300,000 military women braved the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the percentage of divorce tripled compared to the male soldiers.
According to report published by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America or IAVA, eleven percent of soldiers deployed in the war zone are composed of female veterans. This unnerving statistics gives an indication that the civic duties of women soldiers greatly affect their family life.
Erin Muhall of IAVA told New America Media that “after honorably fighting abroad women shouldn’t have to fight another battle here at home.”
IAVA executive director Paul Rieckhoff declared that the military should support its female service members, who are destined overseas, by providing additional support to those who have infants or toddlers. Last year, Maj. Gen. Gayle Pollock proposed at least eight-month maternity extension for female crew. The eight to 12 months extension will help women in the military perform their role as mothers.
The IAVA also tackled the financial issues that could leave female veterans in despair. The report found that female veteran’s gross income is less than what the male soldiers receive, and most females scrounge for jobs that pay as much as their profession. Also, figures show that female veterans are four times to become homeless than women who have never joined the military. |
