When looking for divorce records there are several sources you may be able to use get the information that is needed. Usually your choices to get your hands on Australian divorce records are as follows.

Wherever you live in Australia, the internet provides one of the best resources for finding and accessing divorce records online. There are specialist websites that provide information on regarding various records, such as births, deaths, marriages and divorce. Here are some hints and tips when looking for information.

  • The Queensland Government has a website, which provides a vast amount of information on divorce records for all over Australia.

  • As a rule, very early divorce files in Australia will be found in the Supreme Court Records or the archive of a particular state.

  • Usually divorce records come with restricted access and you will generally have to apply to the registrar of the state you wish to access the divorce records.

  • If the divorce occurred after 1976 then the Family Court of Australia will usually hold the divorce records. However again this may depend on the actual state as to the date. If you want to view your own divorce records, you may do so via the familylawcourts. gov.au website, however, to do so you will need to have a client and file number. This method is generally only of use to the parties involved in the divorce and not friends or family.

  • The State Library of Queensland may be of more use to you when looking for older divorce records. They have an index that covers divorces that have occurred between the years of 1861 and 1894 if you reside in the Southern district and between 1876 to 1899 if you reside in the Northern district of Australia.

  • If the divorce was held in the central district of the Supreme Court then you may want to apply to the registrar of the court to find information on these divorce records.

  • If you live in Southern Australia or this is where the divorce took place then you may find the information on divorce records you want in the matrimonial petitions for divorce section during the years 1859 to 1893. This can be accessed from the state library of Queensland, online.

  • If you reside in New South Wales then you can access divorce case papers between the years 1873 and 1930 via the state library of Queensland, online.

  • If living or enquiring about divorce in Tasmania then you may find the information you need in Tasmanian divorces between 1861 and 1920, which can also be found n the state library of Queensland main website.

  • The Victoria divorce index may also be found at the state library of Queensland for the years 1861 to 1900.

  • Western Australians looking for information on divorce between the years 1864 to 1976 can be found in the search room of the library.
